Horrified, Aya flees while being chased by a chainsaw-wielding Alfred. However, after doing so, Monika reveals to Aya that Alfred murdered her for one of his experiments. In the second ending, Aya saves her father from being taken by her mother's spirit. After returning to the real world, she runs into Maria, who knocks her out, takes her to the basement and then kills her, turning her corpse into a doll. In one ending, Aya allows her undead mother to take her father away to another world. The game has three endings based on the player's choices.

Aya soon discovers that her father killed her mother in fear of her mother taking Aya away to prevent him from performing taxidermy on her. Aya discovers that her father had intended to perform taxidermy on her and convert her into a doll, as he had done to numerous other children, having been enamored with preserving humans after having killed his own mother as a youth. Fleeing back into her room, Aya encounters the mysterious salesman Ogre, who offers her the task of solving puzzles to break into her father's laboratory and uncover his secret. On the anniversary of Monika's death, the very beginning of the game, Aya awakens at midnight to find herself surrounded by test subjects that escaped from the laboratory. Aya is aware that Alfred experiments and kills humans in the basement, as well as the fact that he is involved in an extramarital affair with the younger Maria, a former homeless woman he had taken off the street some years prior. Her father performs secret research in his laboratory in the house's basement, with the assistance of Maria. Her mother, Monika Drevis, was incredibly ill, and presumably died of illness before the occurrence of the game. Aya is a shy girl who never goes outside. Mad Father takes place in northern Germany, where the 11-year old protagonist, Aya Drevis, lives with her father, Alfred Drevis, and their maid Maria. To The Moon is one of those experiences you’ll remember fondly for years to come and make you ponder about things going on in real life. This section needs expansion. The more you play, the more clues you uncover about the man’s past, and the more you understand him. Unlike other stories where these subjects are just glossed over and added some pseudo-philosophical ramblings to make it seem deep, To the Moon instead tells the story of an old man on his deathbed, where the doctors taking care of him have the peculiar job of giving their patients a final wish.Īnd this man’s final wish is to go to the moon. And it does so in such a sincere manner that it really touches the player in their core. This emotionally-charged tale doesn’t pull away from asking the real questions of life, the ones we’ve all wondered at some point and haven’t had a satisfactory answer for. With a heavy emphasis on storytelling and an incredibly drawing narrative, To The Moon is more akin to a visual novel than an RPG. Without spoiling much, I would say that Misao is a go-to game for anyone who has a love for RPG Maker games, and the way it introduces its horror elements, while grisly at times, it’s handled pretty effectively. The female version of Aki is cheerful and it’s willing to do some pretty nasty things to get rid of the curse, while the male version is more reserved and not as likely to do harm. Most games would just leave it to you to fill in the blanks or have a default cardboard personality for the main character when giving you the option to choose a gender, but here it’s different. One thing that I really like about this game is that the personality of the main character fluctuates depending on the gender you choose. This story emphasizes the pain that Misao had to go through as a victim of bullying and neglect by virtually everyone except the protagonist. While improved in a lot of ways, the remade version is a bit less gory, opting instead to have you finding different items of sentimental significance to Misao rather than her body parts. In this twisted world, you have the task to collect the six missing body parts of Misao (gruesome, I know) in order to break the curse that trapped you there.Īlthough, I have to clarify that it occurs that way in the original version. You are teleported into another dimension with a handful of your classmates and teacher.

In this messed up game, you play as Aki Narukami, having the option to play as a male or female, a regular student whose world turns upside down after Misao, a shy classmate, goes missing.
